Bias Ply vs. Radial ST Trailer Tires - Which is right for my application?

Posted by on 9/25/2011 to Tires and Wheels

Two of the more popular trailer tire styles are Bias-Ply and Radial. There are two main differences between the types of tires: how they are constructed and materials used. There are benefits to each, so it is important to consider your needs when choosing the perfect tires for your trailer.

Radial trailer tires are created when polyester cords are used in the center of the tire, overlapped at a 90 degree angle and steel mesh is added for support. These tires generally have a smoother ride, improved fuel economy and they last longer than other types of tires.

Bias-Ply trailer tires do not have the polyester cords and steel mesh, this makes them cheaper to manufacture and therefore cheaper to purchase. The sidewall of this tire is rugged and lasts well, just not quite as well as tires with the radial design. They are recommended for use in trailers or other items that may not be used on a regular basis.
