Car ownership and maintenance requires focus not just on performance and aesthetics, but also a strong focus on safety. The road conditions can be tricky for different types of drivers, thus putting at risk the safety and health of the driver and passengers. Add the condition and age of certain car parts into the mix, and you can discover the perfect recipe that can compromise driver’s safety on and off the road.

As a car owner, it’s important to pay attention to safety and one way to make it happen is by replacing aged tires at appropriate times. Tires can perform a number of things- these can protect the rim and boost car performance, provide a cushion against shock and helps support car weight. With these roles, it is important that tires are properly monitored and replaced when necessary.

Check tire age and shop for replacement

Tires have a lifespan too, and they should be replaced as soon as they show signs of aging. And keep in mind that buying a new set of tires doesn't automatically mean that these are new. There are instances that some consumers were led to believe that they have purchased brand new tires, only to find out that the tires were old. The problem with aging tires is that these can easily fail, thus can compromise everyone’s safety on and off the road.

One solution to the problem is to check the age of the tire and replace when appropriate. One test is to check the printed characters on the tire which tell the tire’s date of manufacture. For example, if the imprinted texts on the tire read “DOT 0403”, then it means that the tire was manufactured during the fourth week of 2003. Once you have verified the year of manufacture, then it’s time to follow the manufacturer recommendations. Porsche suggests that tires should be replaced before the sixth year. General Motors and Ford also see the wisdom in replacing the tires every six years to ensure safety, whether these tires are used regularly or rarely.

But it doesn’t mean that a car owner should only act when the tires are about to be replaced due to age. Safety on and off the road requires a pro-active stance when it comes to tire ownership. It’s recommended to conduct yearly tire inspections, and assess the tires for potential issues like air pressure, worn tread and alignment.
